Painting a Sunflower with Soft Pastels

In this class students will begin with simple blocking in and underpainting, which will create depth in their pieces. Color Theory and composition will be discussed while students watch the instructor present a quick demonstration of a sunflower. By the end of class students will have created a lovely end-of-the-summer flower painting!
Materials Needed:1 Fine Charcoal Pencil and Kneaded Eraser, Blending Stump, Pastels 24-36 set, Pastel Paper U-Art Sanded Pastel Paper 400 0r 600, Apron, Table Easel, Wipes

Creative Nonfiction & Memoir Writing
Mondays, September 16 to October 7, 2024 from 1:15pm to 2:15pm
This generative workshop will encourage deep exploration of the stories and memories that have helped shape our lives. We will read and discuss two memoirs as examples of using prose to "show" the story through scene and description and to "tell" it through reflection. Texts include excerpts from The Glass Eye by Jeannie Vanasco and Heaven is a Place on Earth by Adrian Shirk. Cost: $60 JCC Members/$72 Program Guests. Includes all texts.

Drawing Nuts, Pods and Seeds in Colored Pencil

A continued class offering of the basics of botanical drawing: gradual toning of simple geometric shapes, that create the forms in nature. The process begins with neutral tones layered with color, and the end result is a lovely drawing of autumn nuts, pods and seeds. Suitable for beginners and intermediate artists.
Materials: Drawing Pencils (HB and H or 2H), Kneaded Eraser and Soft White PVC free Eraser, 6’ or 12’ Ruler, Colored Pencils: 24 Count, Drawing Board, A pad of Strathmore Bristol Paper (Smooth).

Botanical Drawing with Colored Pencils- Chrysanthemums

In this 2 1/2 hour class participants will continue to learn the basics of Botanical Drawing. The process of Botanical Drawing begins with gradual toning with simple geometric shapes that turn into all the forms in nature. This process will make your piece three dimensional and pop off the page. We will begin our forms by layering neutral tones and putting on top color with colored pencils. By the end of class students will have created a beautiful Chrysanthemum.
Materials: Drawing Pencils (HB, H, 2H), Drawing Board, Kneaded Eraser and Soft White PVC free Eraser, 6’ or 12’ Ruler, Colored Pencils: 24 or 36 Count, A pad of Strathmore Bristol Paper (Smooth)

Introduction to Collage
Thursday, November 7, 2024 from 1:00 pm to 3:30pm
Collage is the technique and the resulting work of art in which pieces of paper, photos, fabric embellishments and other ephemera are arranged and glued down onto a supporting surface. In this 2 ½ hr. class students will be introduced to collage and its various types, techniques and process of this artform. By the end of class participants will have created a beautiful collage to frame!
Materials Needed for this class:
- Glue Stick & Clear Tacky Glue, OR Mod-Podge /Yes Paste (can be purchased at Arlene’s, Michaels)
- Fine Pair of Scissors
- Tweezers – optional
- Paper Plate
- White Mat Board OR Heavy Illustration Board (5x7 or 8x10-you can purchase at Arlene’s and Michaels)
- Magazines
- Photos
- Fabric scraps
- Paper (scrapbooking paper with and without designs)
- Embellishments (examples: buttons, ribbons stickers, feathers, sequences, felt, fiber old broken jewelry)
- Ephemera- vintage paper, book pages, newspapers, postcards

Beginners Basketweaving Workshop
Tuesdays, November 12 & 19 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm
Learn to weave this popular classic basket. The unique shape starts square at the base and becomes much larger and round at the top. A very good exercise in shaping. We will use natural and dyed reed for this versatile basket that is 14” tall and 7” wide at the base. Please bring scissors, pencil, tape measure and spring-type clothes pins to class. Cost: $72 JCC Members/ $80 Program Guests.
Botanical Drawing with Graphite Pencils - Twigs and Bark

In this class participants continue to learn the basics of Botanical Drawing. The process of Botanical Drawing begins with gradual toning of simple geometric shapes using graphite pencils, which turn into all the forms in nature. Students will learn the grades of graphite wood-encased pencils and how to use them by practicing various techniques to create twigs and bark.
Materials Needed: Strathmore Bristol Smooth Paper, or Stonehenge Hot Pressed Paper, Graphite Pencils (2H, HB, 2B, 4B, 6B, PVC whit Eraser, Kneaded Eraser, Drawing Board, Ruler

Cancellation Policy for Arts & Culture Classes and Workshops
We understand that life brings many surprises to us all, and sometimes people must cancel their class or workshop registration. Please help us continue to offer these wonderful art and culture classes, at the most affordable costs possible, by reading and adhering to our cancellation policy.
Low Enrollment
Classes or workshops may be cancelled when enrollment minimums are not reached. Cancellations are determined no later than 2 business days before the class starts. If the Albany JCC cancels a class or workshop, the participant will have the option to transfer to another class, as long as space is available, or receive a 100% refund.
Refunds
If a participants chooses to cancel their registration for a class or workshop, the refund policies are as follows:
- 100% refund with seven or more days' notice prior to the start date of the class unless specified otherwise*
- No amount refunded after that time. However, you may transfer your registration to another individual not currently registered for the class or workshop.
*Account credit may be given in special circumstances at the discretion of the Jewish Cultural and Community Program Coordinator
